Life of the Party!

I guess it’s safe to say that Fall is over!! We’ve already had our first snow storm, and the temperature in New York feels like it’s dropping everyday! The good news is we are entering the most wonderful time of the year: “The Holiday Season” or at least that’s what we call it! For me, it’s the most stressful 3 months ever! All of the amazing food, family holiday parties, the Fashion festivities... Ok I’m sure reading it doesn’t sound catastrophic, but the stress of not knowing which family member’s party you have to play sick for, figuring out ways to avoid getting Christmas gifts, and not knowing what to wear to all of the fabulous holiday extravaganzas can really take a toll on you. Lol…I’ve been working with endless clients over the past few weeks and honestly, a lot of people are in the same boat when it comes to finding the perfect holiday wardrobe! Everyone wants to look their best while enjoying special moments with loved ones, so I’m going to give you a few easy tips on how to stay fashionable all season long!

Invest in this season’s must have items: These key items will keep you looking your best during the most festive time of the year! Think of it as an investment! With the right styling, you can use these items all season long.

1. Festive Dress: (for example velvet or sequin) This dress gets you through any event! Consider colors like black, bordeaux, and blush.

2. Silk Slip Dress: This will be another easy addition to your wardrobe that will take you from day to night for multiple occasions.

Facetune_08-11-2018-10-37-06.JPG

3. Statement Blazers: Your sports coat is a chic and elevated twist to all casual essentials. Currently, my favorite styles are mid-length double-breasted jackets in animal prints (preferably leopard), tweeds, and of course, a classic velvet blazer.

4. Satin Pants: A pair of satin trousers will work wonders! Something high-waisted with an easy sweater with a hint of lurex will make an amazing holiday look.

5. Pumps: I mean this is a given! Pumps complete any look, casual or dressy. At this point, you should already have a go-to pair!!

Prioritize your accessories!
Your accessories are a key factor to your overall look, and can most certainly make or break your outfit. Consider purchasing pieces that go from day-to-night, but make a bold and chic statement. This will elevate your style and overall appearance.

Working in fashion, I’ve had the pleasure of learning so much about people. As part of my job, discovering a client’s story makes the experience personal, and essentially helps you style them the way they need to be. Chatting with my clients, I find out ALL different kinds of things like juicy neighborhood gossip, what the kids have been up to, not to mention, there’s always some life-long lessons. Throughout my years in the industry, one thing that I always realized is health and fitness plays such a vital role in most people’s everyday life. Some people choose to eat right but might not go to the gym; others may exercise all day long and eat like shit. I think personally I have a good balance of both: I work out about 4 to 5 times a week and maintain a healthy diet, but I also have a cheat meal once in a blue moon. One thing I do know is that a healthy body also creates a healthier mental state. I will admit, fitness is not my strongest or easiest subject to discuss. I mean I do an “ok” job at keeping myself together, but there are so many questions I have. Fortunately, I have people in my life to turn to when I am struggling with my weight, or just trying to stay healthy, and Amanda Margusity is my go-to fitness guru! I mean she is a beast! Not only that, she’s also extremely fashion savvy as she and I have worked together for many years in the fashion industry. Now that she has decided to redirect her focus to health and fitness, I have more motivation to stay on point. I know I can speak for all my readers when I ask, “How do we maintain the perfect figure during the year?!”  I had the opportunity to sit down with Amanda, where she gave me all the tea on her transition to fitness, and how she remains sexy during the most tempting times of the year!

1, Coming from a background in fashion, what influenced the transition to fitness, and why was it critical for you to make that change?

My transition into fitness came at a time of questioning. I was really unhappy with my current career, I didn’t feel like I belonged and just felt high pressure and high stress 24/7.  I went into work every day asking myself is this what I want to do with my life?  Did I waste the last 5 years of college on this career?  I stayed for the wrong reasons but eventually was forced out of the position which was a blessing!  If that push did not happen I wouldn’t be where I am today.  It was a great shove to finding me. When I lost my job, I started working the front desk at spin studio.  I was a rider there and the owner offered me a deal I couldn’t refuse, free fitness and a chill gig. I used fitness as an outlet to destress and now I could destress for free- AWESOME! I quickly realized the fitness environment was for me, I felt super comfortable and felt free. I laughed and continue to laugh every day, I love the people I work with and more importantly when my alarm goes off at 430a I look forward to starting my day.  I never had that in my fashion gig, I was the person running in late at 930am which to me now is super late in the day.  I’m ready for my second meal at that time.

Now, why was it critical for me to make the change- well it was critical for me to stay in fitness for happiness.  I went back into the fashion world for a hot second and quickly realized how it wasn’t a good fit.  I had this aha moment one day sitting at my desk where I asked myself "what am I actually getting out of being here in a bigger scale besides money?" You can make money anywhere as long as you work hard, right? It was scary AF- my salary went from being super comfortable to ok was that a moth that just flew out of my wallet.  But I took it day by day and worked my butt off.  Fast-forward to 4 years later, I am happy, comfortable and have 0 regrets.  Somedays I work from 5a-10p at night but those are the days that fly by and I come home with the biggest smile on my face.  All the hours spent working are so worth it- my grind is so enjoyable and at 31 if it makes me happy I am doing it.  If it makes me sad- I exit stage left.  I've realized that in life we need to do what sets our souls on fire, we have one life to live so why waste the hours being unhappy and uncomfortable. This goes for people too-> DO NOT SURROUND YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO MAKE YOU UNHAPPY.  If they aren’t clapping for you, leave their ass in the dust and find people who clap the loudest for you. Time is too valuable and precious. I have the best job in the world- I get to wake up every single day, sweat with a bunch of people, I get to high five, hug and just crush the day with strong individuals who support each other rather than scream at each other because they didn’t finger space a rack for a corporate visit.  People ask me all the time would I go back to corporate America and my answer is an instant f*ck NO!  I really relate to the quote “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.  I never feel like I’m working!

2. As an expert, what are the benefits of actually living a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally?

There’s so many benefits to living a healthy lifestyle, the list is so long!  But I like to focus on the following: increased energy, clear mind, healthier hair and skin, add years to your life, increase happiness and badassery, increase of confidence and a decrease stress.  I also like to joke that you smell better but that’s not always true. When I increased my garlic, I did not smell better.

Working out regularly and eating a healthy balanced diet will drastically improve your overall life.  When you eat like shit you feel like shit and have lack of energy which you can’t dominate life and the workplace with low energy or feeling like crap- no one is inspired by a tired human.  When you feel your best, you are more confident and confidence is intoxicating and sexy. Seriously, you walk into a room feeling confident I guarantee you will see all the positive responses from people.  I suggest finding a work out you enjoy, DO NOT go to a workout where you stare at the clock, count the minutes and dread the instructors face. If you don’t like to spin or box don’t do it, we are in the age of group fitness where there’s so many different methods to enjoy.  Working out should be fun and when you start having fun is when you are really living your best life!

Once you start seeing results whether it’s strength base, weight loss or health that’s when the happiness comes in. You are proud of the hard work you put in and it’s going to motivate you to continue.  That happiness will then morph you into this badass human- the superhero theory as I call it. If you can reach just one goal in the health category you can do anything.  The journey to your ultimate self isn’t easy and if it was everyone would do it but that’s why the person who is dedicated to the journey is so special, they are badass.

3. What tips do you have for someone who wants to live a healthy life, but can’t really bring themselves to do so?

So many tips!  However, I’ll focus on one. When you can’t bring yourself to switch gears find a friend. Find someone you are inspired by, who you trust and who would motivate you.  Fit families and fit friends are real and they work. Group fitness classes are the new happy hour.  Friends are grinding together like never before. Also, when you sign up for class with a friend you can’t be the one to cancel and be that person, right? Don’t be that friend, also don’t collect those late fees- they suck!

4 What are 3 ways to incorporate health and fitness in your daily life without huge life altering changes?

  1. Skip the elevator or escalator and take the stairs
  2. Increase your water intake. Skip the sugary drinks and order a water. 1 its free and 2 it’s refreshing. Add a lemon wedge for taste. If you can’t stand water think of it as an unlimited brunch beverage. We can throw back 5 mimosas in under an hour but it takes us 6 hours to drink a glass of water, too funny!
  3. Prepare your food. Make a grocery list, go grocery shopping and make your food. Pack your lunches and snacks. It will help to save money, you know what’s going in your food and you can control the menu.

If you live in a city and do not have to drive, walk to work- skip the subway and delete the uber app!

5. We all want to know! How do you stay in shape for the summer with all these festivities and temptations?

This is my favorite time of year for so many reasons!  Rosé, rooftops, BBQs and I get to take my workouts outside. This summer I am super focused on spending as much time as possible in the sun. It recharges me. I like to bring my TRX trainers outside and do a hiit workout with them, go on a run or even yoga in the park.  Living in NYC you can always find a workout outside either on a rooftop or in the park. With the weather being a mess these days I have taken my workouts indoors. Right now, my biggest guilty pleasure is the Megaformer at SLT- it’s such a hard workout and it is my goal to master it. Doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or an advanced client you will feel the burn and get the shakes. It’s awesome!

Everyone knows I love street style! There's nothing better than someone swagged out enough to make a pair of ripped Oneteaspoon jeans and an oversized OffWhite sweatshirt look cool. I wanted to highlight some more elevated pieces like this gold wrap dress by Michelle Mason, and this sick one shoulder sweater by Pucci to create some sophisticated daytime street style looks. I've also ditched the large dramatic and overstuffed day bag, and replaced it with a more chic, mini approach. A few of my favorites are the Alexander Wang Attica Mini Backpack, this Hot Pink Edie Parker "Wolf Shard" clutch, and this dope Corset Hand-Strap clutch by Perrin.

Below are a few easy closet add-ons to stay on trend this Spring/Summer season.

Textured Pump/Every Occasion Sneakers: For those looking for something more high-end, brands like Balenciaga, Gucci, and Chanel are some great options. For those that are not trying to break the bank, a few of my favorites brands right now are Adidas, Common Projects and Golden Goose. They are both cool and affordable.

Fun Platform Heels: (try something printed to spice it up)

Classic Sandals: My favorites are the Coline strappy sandals by Guiseppe Zanotti

LRG_DSC01590.jpg

Novelty Skirts: Patent leather and graphic prints are great go-to styles for a high-fashion street style look.

Slogan T-Shirts: This is something you can find anywhere! You can walk into any vintage shop or stop at a cool street vendor down in Soho; either way it will get the job done.

Sexy Day Dress: None of us want to feel overdressed during the day, but I do recommend styles that can transition from day-to-night. If for nothing else, you will get more use out of it!!

Elevated Day Bags: The mini bag is the new wave! I know it sucks not to be able to stuff your entire apartment in your purse but the good news is, you will look stylish and have less crap to carry... LOL

IMG_4457.JPG

High-Waisted Flared Jeans/Wide Leg Pants: This might not be the easiest item to pull off, but for those who can, it will change everything. It will not just make your legs appear a mile long, but if you pair that with a crop top, and a great mini bag - you're done!

Comfortable Styling

I know some people feel it's difficult to be comfy and look cool at the same time. The trick to pulling off a fashionable and comfortable look is simple: add a few easy-to-wear fashion staples to your casual wardrobe. After I purchased my Saint Laurent suede boots, every outfit I wore felt more elevated and just as comfortable, but once I added some classic sunglasses, I felt like one of the cool kidz.

Below are a few of my suggestions to making your casual closet more fashion-forward.

Invest in key staples: These core items will keep your wardrobe comfortable and fashionable.

1. Chelsea Boots (Brown/Tan suede and Black leather) - These two styles will get you through it all.

Saint Laurent: Classic Wyatt 40 Chelsea Boot

2. Easy-to-wear low top sneakers

Top: Golden Goose Stater $550; Bottom: Stan Smith $75

3. Everyday sunglasses

4. Classic belts

5. Great quality t-shirts: Love My Calvins

6. An affordable watch

Dress using Highs and Lows: If you're wearing something that feels more casual, add an item to elevate your look. If you're wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt, add a pair of sunglasses and some cool sneaker for a more fashionable approach.

Add a Layer: Adding something as simple as a leather moto jacket, denim jacket, or a lightweight bomber jacket can take your look from dumpy to stylish.

Exude Confidence: We all look at ourselves and say "damn I look good" but in turn leave that excitement and confidence in the house. Always remember, having a Stylish Manner is also showing everyone else how much of a bad ass you are!

On the Go Styling

With things always changing in such a fast moving city, I try to keep in mind that anything can go down in a moment's notice when hitting the city streets. So when I'm on the go, I try to wear pieces comfortable enough to cruise the streets, but also elevated enough to stumble into a dope shindig if I needed to. Just the other day, I was out and about when I got a call from my friend, asking if I was in Manhattan. I happened to be doing some shopping in Midtown when she invited me to have drinks with her and a few friends at the Standard Hotel. One friend was a celebrity hair stylist, whose looks have graced the cover of magazines like Harper's Bazaar and Elle. The other was a makeup artist who's traveled the world to beat the most famous faces. Her goal was to introduce me to some well-connected people who were willing to collaborate on future projects. I was extremely anxious, and a bit nervous hoping we would all hit it off. The one thing that kept me together was that I felt really good on the outside; my outfit was LIT! So like always, I walked into the spot like I owned the joint, ordered a few drinks, and the rest is history. We had an amazing time, and I am looking forward to an insane collab in the near future.

I wanted to highlight a few of my favorite "on-the-go" looks. I was so obsessed with my custom-made Romeo Hunte Army Fatigue long jacket look that I wore it to his Spring 2018 fashion show during NYFW. I also loved the printed wax-coated Kenzo pants paired with that Zara studded leather jacket for a Fashion and Art Gallery opening. But the look I loved the most was when I was just chilling, running errands in a Balenciaga hat, Tom Ford sunglasses, Romeo Hunte cropped jacket and silk v-neck tee, Zara ripped skinny jeans and some Gucci fur slippers.

The best thing about fashion is it has evolved into this amazing and creative pool of INDIVIDUALITY. We are in a time where expressing yourself through your own personal style is more acceptable than ever before. I am so inspired by the millennials, and how passionate and comfortable they are about standing out. Because they make breaking the rules look so easy, I make it a point to always put my best foot forward. I can truly say, I feel really good when I know I look fab. I walk down the street like I own it, and that's what style is all about. Some of us do it for the attention of others, and yes it feel great to be noticed. But always remember, until you're living your life for you, your true style will never shine through. So I say, "Do you, have fun, and live the stylish way!"

Fall/Winter Styling

Fall/Winter is my favorite time of year! This is the time I bring out all of my most fun pieces like statements coats, cool hats and glasses, and my favorite layering item, the oversized scarf! For all of you fashionistas and fashionistos, you know that adding smart and easy layers is the key to a stylish outfit. One of the easiest tricks to staying in style during the cooler weather is adding both bold and sleek pieces to your day-to-day look to feel more elevated. A tailored coat is a man's best friend during the cold season, but adding that unexpected layer like a chunky scarf and some cool shades will keep you both warm and fashionable.

I remember reading something that will stick with me forever:

"There's no such thing as BAD weather, only INAPPROPRIATE clothing."

- Sir Ranulph Fiennes

My Top 10 Must Have Fall/Winter Essentials:

1. Soft wool overcoat.

2. Heavy duty parka.

3. Wool beanie and felt hats: Goorin Bros is a great place to find cool hats of all types.

4. Dark denim jeans (I tend to go a bit lighter).

5. Black/brown everyday boots (also a cold weather boot): I love a great Saint Laurent boot, but you can get the same look for a lot less at places like Top Shop and ASOS.

6. A pair of suede loafers.

7. Great layering sweaters.

8. An oversized scarf: I personally think a larger scarf creates a more high-fashion moment.

9. An affordable watch.

10. Cool sunglasses: Oversized aviators, round vintage frames, and square wayfarers are some of my go-to styles.
